Peer Advocacy

There are two types of peer programs at LIFTT.  They are peer mentoring and peer advocacy.

The peer mentoring program is people with disabilities sharing their life experiences with other people with disabilities.  They work together to help each other solve problems, learn new skills, and achieve their life goals.

It is our belief that there is nothing like real life experiences that teach what the world is really like.  Peer mentors work with other persons with disabilities either in a group or individual setting.  They help them learn life skills such as budgeting, cooking, housecleaning, personal assistance management, personal adjustment to disability, developing transportation systems, managing social security benefits, etc.  This service has a cross disability base.  The customer is matched with the person best able to teach the skill or help resolve the problem.

Peer advocates participate in local advocacy events to promote systems change.  Samples of peer advocates activities include monitoring events around the area to insure accessibility, work on Olmstead implementation, and work on legislative activities.

If you are interested in receiving peer mentoring services contact Dave by phone (406) 259-5181 or 1-800-669-6319. You can also email him at daves@liftt.org
